Ireland was heartbroken in the 2023 ODI World Cup qualifiers last month. But the 2024 T20 World Cup selection is no longer a story of pain. Paul Sterling's team secured a place in the T20 World Cup by securing the position in the top two of the European qualifiers.
Next year T20 World Cup will be held in West Indies and USA. 12 teams were already confirmed in this tournament of 20 teams. Which includes the two host teams, the top eight teams of the 2022 T20 World Cup, and the Bangladesh and Afghanistan teams based on the rankings.
The remaining eight teams will be the finalists from the five regional qualifiers. Where two places are allocated for Europe. 7 teams are playing in the final round of European qualifiers which started with 28 teams. Ireland had won the first four matches to take eight points in this round of head-to-head matches.
Today was Sterling's fifth match against Germany. In the Ireland-Germany match in Edinburgh, Scotland, not a single ball was put on the ground. Abandoned due to rain, points split. With 9 points from 5 matches, the Irish are sure to be in the top two. That's why Ireland has secured a place in the 2024 T20 World Cup with one match in hand.
The Irish will face Scotland in the final match tomorrow. Scots are almost certain to be in the top two with eight points from 4 matched.
